Summer foot care and UV protection.

Suprising how many people forget to put an ultraviolet protection cream on their feet in the summer. It’s like we have this relationship with our feet that goes like this: “You’re my feet and you will look after yourself”. The fact is that the skin is like skin anywhere else on our body. Its part of the biggest organ in our body. Responsible for keeping infection out, temperature regulation, making our feet look beautiful, protection from trauma, vitamin D production and lots of other things. But it can still get damaged by the sun and expose our body to the danger of cancer. Cancers of the feet do take place, and olive skin that is less likely to burn, does not mean it does not require protection. So please, apply at least an SPF 15 or better still higher, to you and your family’s feet, whenever you are out in the sun.

Foot care and exercise.

It is commonly considered now, that including exercise in your daily routine is absolutely necessary for helping to ward off chronic disease. For this reason I urge you to consider visiting me to review your exercise routine. It truly is a great medicine. If you think about the amazing advances that have taken place last century in medical care, you will be in total amazement and awe. But think about the diseases that are statistically on the rise. Yes, the chronic diseases such as heart disease, Diabetes and obesity. So good foot health becomes a priority, because foot pain truly can limit your ability to make the exercise efforts, which will lower the risk of going on to develop chronic diseases. The good news is that getting out of the vicious cycle of foot pain may propel you in a fresh new direction, focusing on optimum health. So, happy exercising and let me know if something is preventing you from achieving your personal best!

Sports shoes and exercise.

So how are your sports shoes at the moment? Are they up to the job of carrying you around injury free in your exercise routine? Many people do not realize that sporting shoes have a life span that does not last forever. For instance, a pair of walking shoes will give their best performance for 3 20-30 minute walks for about 6 months maximum. After that their ability to biomechanically support your foot decline rapidly. And the story for running shoes? Lives span often even less. Shin splints, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, Joint injury and stress fractures are just some of the potential sports injuries that come to my mind as possibilities. Even if you did not realize this, better to know now and take it into consideration when buying sports shoes. Be careful not to pay too much. I would rather help you select a good well priced shoe in the mid priced bracket, and save the extra money to buy new shoes more often. Research in shoe companies is passed down so fast from the top shoe to the mid priced shoe. Otherwise shoe companies could not compete, n the price range where most people buy their shoes. (I.e. Good quality to be found from $130-$140 and upwards). And remember if you wear the best quality prescription foot orthotics available (the only prescription foot orthotics worth bothering with) then they must be in a shoe of satisfactory structural rigidity and shape. Otherwise you may only be getting very average correction to our biomechanical stability requirements. Happy shoe hunting. One more thing. Get a well qualified shoe technician to help with your selection. Athletes Foot store is a good place to start.
